FORT SMITH (KFSM) - Project Compassion is a non-profit located at the St. Scholastica Monastery that provides a helping hand to 26 nursing homes in Fort Smith. But, the organization relies on funding and the United Way of Fort Smith is one main source.

For a "5NEWS This Morning" segment that aired Saturday (June 13), anchor Daren Bobb spoke to Executive Director Marion Conrad about Project Compassion's work. She said they were started in 1972 by Glory White as a way for volunteers to spend time with nursing home residents. She also said what's critical for them is having that inter-generational friendship between the volunteers and seniors.

On June 25th, they'll be having their Sizzle and Summer Hearts of Gold event, where they collect donations for nursing homes residents. It will be located at the parking of Trinity Jr High School from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
