GREENWOOD (KFSM) – It's a city that has seen one shooting in the past 15 years.
"You don't ever really hear of anything happening,” said resident Doug Porter, who moved to Greenwood in 1999. “We've always heard that Greenwood schools were great , so that's where we started looking and we found what we liked."
Police Chief Will Dawson said earning the number one spot from Niche is an honor.
“First and foremost I [have to] thank the guys at the police department for their hard work. They truly care about the community and they work hard to keep the citizens safe,” Dawson said. “Having a highly trained fire department is also a big key to keeping the city safe.”
He said the people of Greenwood are quick to report things that seem out of place.
“The people looking out for each other is a big key to keeping the city safe,” he said.
He said in the past, the same organization named Greenwood the 20th best place to raise a family in the United States, and it has been named in the top safest cities in Arkansas before -- but this time, it’s number one.
"I think we're very fortunate to have the little crime that we have," Dawson said.
Bentonville was listed as the third safest city. Clarksville, Mena and Rogers made the top ten.
