ARKOMA (KFSM)- Weeks after major flooding that prompted assistance from FEMA, some in LeFlore County are still rebuilding.
Residents were cleaning up Monday (June 15) on Faulkner Street in Arkoma.
“It was storming really bad and my mom was really scared,” Abigail Johnson said. “We had to leave the house. The water pushed the door open and it started coming into the house so we had to get our Kindles and leave.”
According to Abigail's mother, Amanda Johnson, the flooding did about $63,000-worth of damage. She said the damage isn't just physical, but emotional as well.
“It is sickening,” Johnson said.
Johnson said they received about three inches of water in their house.
“Just that little bit of water doing that much damage in our house," she said. "You don't think of it being that much. You start talking about walls, doors and flooring and cabinets, how quickly it can all add up,” Johnson said.
The Johnson’s said they hope to be back at home in about three weeks. Abigail said she can’t wait to sleep in her own bed.
“Because it is so comfortable and at our grandma's we only get to sleep on a mattress on the ground,” she said.
The family has flood insurance.
