LEFLORE COUNTY (KFSM)-FEMA representatives were set up at Poteau High School's Community safe room Wednesday (June 17) helping people claim damages caused by an EF-2 tornado that hit parts of the area last month.
“Anytime that a disaster declaration has been made by the President of the United States, then the state and that county has shown that there is definitely a need here,” Susan Solomon, FEMA said.
Pine Ridge Circle was one of the hardest hit streets by the twister. Some residents there told 5NEWS they are seeking claims from their adjusters first, but Jill Thompson said she doesn’t have insurance and will need assistance.
“I didn't think I'd ever need them, but you know I'm glad they're there to help people,” Thompson said.
Thompson and her family were home when the storms hit on May 25.
“The kids were scared, but it just barely missed the house and just went through and took all the trees of our yard and hit the home next door,” she said.
FEMA representatives said it's easy to register with the agency.
When you get to the Disaster Recovery Center (DRC), they will first put you on the phone with 1-800-621-FEMA. They will take your basic information, your full name, your SSN, the SSN of your family members, the address where your damage occurred and a mailing address. You can also do this from home.
“DRCs are one-stop shops where survivors can get information and guidance about what disaster assistance may be available,” a release from FEMA states.
FEMA representatives also suggest registering your damage with the small business administration even if you're not seeking a loan.
They said this will help you be considered for all possible federal assistance.
The federal agency will be set up in Poteau from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the rest of the week. They will wrap up on Saturday (June 20) at 7 p.m.
