Arkansas third baseman signs pro contract with Houston after being drafted in 30th round

FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) – Less than a week after ending his junior season with the Razorbacks, junior third baseman Bobby Wernes is taking a run at professional baseball.

Wernes signed with the Houston Astros on Friday (June 19) after being drafted in the 30th round last week.

Wernes hit .279 after starting in 64 of Arkansas’ 65 games in 2015 while he drove in 27 runs and had 18 extra base hits, five of which were home runs. The

The junior from Overland Park, Kan. was a career .252 hitter with the Razorbacks after hitting just .272 as a sophomore in 2014. Wernes finished with eight doubles, six triples and five home runs during his time with Arkansas.

Wernes made a name for himself in the field in 2015 as his defense cracked the ESPN top 10 list a handful of times and earned him a spot on the All-SEC defensive team.
