SEBASTIAN COUNTY (KFSM) - While the 4th of July can be fun for many, national statistics show it's also one of the most dangerous days of the year.

You don't have to put yourself in danger to have fun for the holiday. You can still get your hands on all sorts of fireworks like bottle rockets, sparklers, and cherry bombs. But there are some safety tips you definitely need to keep in mind when you shoot them off.

Fort Smith Fire Marshal Carey St. Cyr said the most important thing is that children aren't allowed to light or shoot off fireworks. Only adults should take on those responsiblities.

It's also important that the fireworks aren't aimed at any buildings or homes because that could easily start a fire. Another good idea is to keep a water hose or bucket full of water close in case of an emergency.

St. Cyr said over the years he's seen it all, especially when it comes to injuries from fireworks. But the number one way people get injured is by second guessing whether or not a firework fuse has been lit.

"When a firework doesn't happen to go off, don't go reapproach it because it could still be ignited inside," said Cyr.

He also adds that everyone who is just enjoying the fireworks should be a safe distance away. Maybe grab some lawn chairs or a blanket so everyone can just sit back and relax.
