GREENWOOD (KFSM)-The city’s police department will soon have a new headquarters, but all the recent rain has put the project behind schedule.
The department currently operates inside a small space at city hall, but soon they will be moving into a 10,500 sq. ft. facility on Old Hackett Road.
“The space now, we make due but that certainly makes things difficult in several different aspects of our jobs,” Police Chief Will Dawson said.
The new Greenwood Police Headquarters will have a state of the art training room, two interview rooms, two holding cells and a lab to process evidence.
“We have a portion of the building that's gonna be storm shelter, so we can actually keep our command here and be able to watch the weather from here instead of going somewhere else,” Chief Dawson said.
Personnel have about 1,000 sq. ft. to operate out inside City Hall.
“Getting to spread out and actually have something professional to work out of and the space we need to store things, instead of renting storage facilities is certainly gonna be a great help to us,” Chief Dawson said.
Michael Lejong is the architect on the project. He said the inside is 95 percent complete.
“We have some carpet and painting left to do on the inside,” Lejong said, “and on the outside, we have the installation of some metal panels and completing the parking lot.”
The project costs roughly $2.8 million.
“We got a quarter-cent sales tax passed and were able to obtain bonds to do this project that'll sunset as soon as it's paid off,” Chief Dawson said.
Lejong said they wanted the project to be done in July, but the weather has set them back until the end of August.
Chief Dawson said they will hold two open houses soon after they move in. One will be for the general public, and the other will be held to show kids around the new station.
