FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) – A new arraignment date has been set for a University of Arkansas janitor who was arrested in June on suspicion of failing to register as a sex offender, authorities say.

Christopher Dixon, 37, was scheduled to be arraigned on Friday (July 10), but that date has been reset to July 17, records show. He is on paid leave from the university pending an investigation, officials said.

Dixon was booked into the Washington County Detention Center on June 9. He is facing a charge of failure to register as a sex offender, according to jail records.

At 3:12 a.m. on June 9, a University of Arkansas police officer was checking a parking lot near the Nanoscale Material Science & Engineering Building when he noticed a collapsible baton wedged in between the driver’s seat and center console of a gray Ford F-150 pickup truck, authorities said.

While the officer was checking the license plate, the owner of the truck came out to speak with the officer. The officer identified the man as Dixon and checked his criminal history through a police dispatcher.

The officer learned Dixon is a registered sex offender on probation, according to an arrest report.

Police said the officer called Dixon’s probation officer and asked if he was registered as a sex offender with the University of Arkansas. The officer said Dixon was not registered with the school and had worked for the university for more than a year, the report states. Dixon was taken into custody afterward.

The University of Arkansas campus directory showed Dixon as an institutional service assistant. He worked the graveyard shift, according to the directory.

A spokesman for the university did not immediately know Dixon’s current employment status.

Dixon bonded out of jail on June 9 at 3:45 p.m. His bond was set at $3,500, according to jail records.

Dixon was accused of raping a 16-year-old girl on April 11, 1998, and a 12-year-old girl in October 1995, according to an arrest warrant. The warrant was issued on Oct. 2, 1998.

On Dec. 28, 1998, Dixon was convicted of first-degree sexual abuse, according to court documents. He was sentenced to 10 years probation and 120 days in jail, officials said.

On April 19, 2012, an arrest warrant was issued for Dixon, and he was accused of failing to comply with sex offender reporting requirements. He was convicted of failing to comply with sex offender reporting requirements on June 22, 2012, and sentenced to four years of probation, according to court documents.
