POTEAU (KFSM) -- Leflore County residents and business owners whose property got damaged in recent storms could soon be getting some federal help.

The FEMA Disaster Recovery Team set up Thursday (July 9) at the Poteau High School.

It has been two months since an EF2 tornado tore through the west side of Poteau, striking many homes in its path. 5NEWS spoke with several Poteau families who said they had trees down and roofs that were badly damaged in the storm. Several even had debris from their homes found hundreds of feet away from their house due to the high winds.

Although residents have been working to get the debris left behind cleaned up, they still have a lot of damage that needs to be repaired. So when a natural disaster hits an area, that is when FEMA steps in.

Starting Thursday, FEMA will be at the Poteau High School to help people claim damages from the storm.

Workers will take basic information. Your full name, social security number, the address of where the damage occurred and your mailing address.

FEMA representatives said you can also do the entire process through the phone.

Below are the hours FEMA will be on-site.

  • Friday (July 10) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Saturday (July 11) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Sunday (July 12) from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Monday (July 13) from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
