FORT SMITH (KFSM)-Brent Morrison was a member of the Western Arkansas Runners club.
“A lot of people do run as individuals, unfortunately Brent was by himself [Saturday],” Sheri Nicholls, Western Arkansas Runners president said.
Sheri Nicholls and some members of Western Arkansas Runners were out running in Chaffee Crossing on Saturday morning (July 11), around the same time 44-year-old Brent Morrison was found shot to death on Wells Lake Road.
“On my way back is when I was alerted to what had happened by one of our fellow WAR members, Nicholls said, "and so I was heading up that way, and I alerted some of our other runners."
The group has set up a Brent Morrison Memorial Facebook Page. A 5K run/walk in honor of Morrison will take place at 6:30 a.m. Saturday (July 18). Participants are asked to meet at the Wells Lake parking lot.
“We’re trying to do what we can to just honor him,” Nicholls said. “It's a tragedy. It's a loss.”
She said the goal is to bring the community together, remember Morrison and bring "back Chaffee".
“Chaffee is a wonderful place, and that's why we're wanting to do this out there, just to bring back Chaffee, and not let this be a detriment to it."
In addition to being an avid runner, Morrison’s wife tells 5NEWS he worked at EnSite Engineering in Tulsa.
“His wife was involved with our Women Run Arkansas group,” Nicholls said. “She was one of the leaders, and so got to know her too, so it's very close to our family. We are a family of runners, and we've just all come together.”
There will be a place to leave items to honor Morrison at the event on Saturday. A balloon release will also take place at the memorial run.
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Morrison’s wife with funeral costs.
“Keep his family in your prayers and come out and support us on Saturday morning,” Nicholls said.
