It's almost the same scenario this July as it was last summer for the Oklahoma Sooners.
OU has a returning quarterback and another nipping at his heels. And like last summer, the returning starter may be on the way out.
Trevor Knight won the starting job a season ago after a dominant performance against Alabama in the bowl game and followed that up with a strong spring. Now Knight may be on the losing end of the position battle as Baker Mayfield has emerged as the front runner.
The Texas Tech transfer appears to be thriving under new offensive coordinator Lilncoln Riley but coach Bob Stoops said the decision is no where near made.
"I know it's popular for everyone to act like a certain guy has already gotten the job," Stoops said at Big XII media days. "That couldn't be further from the truth. Trevor Knight, Baker Mayfield are in a tight battle and Cody Thomas is right on their hills. Whoever can make the most consistent plays, be the most consistent in moving the ball and can avoid the really bad play will be the guy that's on the field."
Riley was an assistant at Texas Tech before taking over as offensive coordinator at East Carolina.
