FORT SMITH (KFSM)- A 20-year-old man is dead and another man is in custody following a shooting Wednesday night (July 23) around 7:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Daniel Grubbs with Fort Smith Police.

Dwight Neal Hawley, 53, is in custody at the Sebastian County Detention Center without bond after he was arrested on suspicion of shooting Carlos Araujo-Mejia, according to authorities.

Hawley faces charges of first degree murder degree, felon in possession of a firearm, and terroristic threatening in the first degree.

Police responded to the area near South 2nd and South E Streets at approximately 7:30 p.m. regarding reports of a shooting, according to the release. The victim's girlfriend was also on scene, according to the release.

According to witnesses, an argument broke out between Araujo-Mejia, his girlfriend and Hawley that led to the shooting, the release states. Alcohol is believed to have been a factor, according to the release.

Officers found an .20 gauge shotgun at the scene, the release states.
