FORT SMITH (KFSM) - The school board told 5NEWS they don't believe there was anything illegal about the way the meeting was conducted earlier this month. However, the board has been unavailable to issue a new statement since the lawsuit was filed. Meanwhile, a rally is being held Friday (July 24) at Southside High School in support of both the rebel mascot and the Dixie fight song.

Hundreds are expected to come and show their support of Southside's long-standing traditions for both the rebel mascot and the Dixie fight song.

This is after administrators made a recommendation to to discontinue the use of "Dixie" as the school's fight song in the upcoming school year. Also, phase out the use of the rebel as the school's mascot the following school year.

Attorney Joey McCutchen is now hoping that this rally tonight will help bring the community together to celebrate Southside's history. He said he wants the rally to be a place where everyone in the community can have an open discussion about the song and mascot that represent the school.

McCuthchen wants current and former Southside students to be able to have a platform to share their stories and memories. Not only that, but most importantly talk about how much the mascot and song mean to them.

The rally will be at 6:30 at the Southside Football Stadium. Everyone is welcome to come out and express their opinions.

McCutchen said he has even invited the school board to the rally and is hopeful that they will come and explain their decision to the community.
