SCOTT COUNTY (KFSM) - A five-year-old boy is dead after a home is destroyed in an early morning fire, according to the Scott County Sheriff's Department.
First responders and the Scott County Coroner found the body in the rubble.
Dispatchers confirmed the fire happened off Highway 71 South near Waldron around 2:00 a.m. Tuesday (July 28).
The house was destroyed in the flames.
A friend of the family told 5NEWS that the family was asleep when the home caught fire.
Ryan Walker said he would have been the boy's principal when he entered kindergarten in August.
He released a statement saying, "We are saddened by the tragic loss of one of our students at Waldron Schools. We send our heartfelt condolences to the family."
Other Waldron residents say they are shocked.
Wanda Ridenour has lived in Waldron for more than 30 years.
"It`s sad," Ridenour said. "It`s sad that a little one had to die in this. I know he`s in Heaven now. I just know he`s in Heaven, and I hope that the family find peace."
The fire is still under investigation.
