SPRINGDALE (KFSM) – The Springdale Police Department took a standoff suspect into custody on Wednesday afternoon (July 29), authorities say.

The suspect was identified as Jorge Velazquez, 24, police said.

On Wednesday morning, police responded to a person barricaded in a house, authorities say.

Police say the standoff took place on Cave Creek Lane.

According to authorities, Velazquez was armed inside the home during the standoff, and police found a firearm in the home.

Police said the firearm was discharged four times while officers were on scene.

Velazquez was hit with a Taser, according to police, after failing to obey commands.

"Once he was outside the house, he did not comply with officer instructions,” said Scott Lewis, PIO for Springdale Police. “To get him in a position where officers could approach him safely, we did deploy a Taser. He was handcuffed at that time.”

Velazquez was transported to the hospital for medical attention.

Witnesses to the standoff tell 5NEWS it was a frightening situation.

"Police were just in and out, running back and forth,” said Mayra Velazquez, who lives nearby but is not related to Jorge. “Then swat teams arrived, and snipers. And that was when we were like 'what's going on? This must be something serious'.”
