FORT SMITH (KFSM)- Southside High School in Fort Smith has a new fight song following a Fort Smith School Board decision to change the school's fight song and mascot.

"Wabash Cannonball" will replace "Dixie," according to Southside High School Principal Wayne Haver.

The school board voted Monday (July 27) to change the fight song for the 2015-2016 school year and to change the Rebel mascot known as Johnny Reb by the 2016-2017 school year.

Haver said he has listened to more than 500 fight songs and a committee picked "Wabash Cannonball." He said Southside is going to use a more upbeat and fast-paced version of the song that is used by Kansas State University, which can be heard here. Southside will also have a shorter version of the fight song that they will play after touchdowns.

Haver said they decided to go with "Wabash Cannonball" because the song stands out from the other fight songs the committee was considering. The Southside High School band will begin practicing a slightly different arrangement of the Kansas State version of the song next Monday, according to Haver.

You’re kidding me, right? This song is offensive to hobo’s. I can hear it now…my daddy was a hobo during the great depression, he died upon the rails trying to get to a better place to find work…

“Listen to the jingle the rumble and the roar
As she glides along the woodland through the hills and by the shore
Hear the mighty rush of the engine hear the lonesome hobos call
You’re traveling through the jungle on the Wabash Cannonball”

Seriously? Out of 500 songs that’s the best they could come up with? Don’t get me wrong, I love that old song for what it is, but for a FIGHT song? You couldn’t find a more peacful and serene tune. I think the students should be asked to submit suggestions from a select group of possible songs then let THEM vote on it. It’s THEIR song after all.

Really, the kids. And their just the kids now, what about the next group of kids in 3 years. Do they get to pick a different song if they don’t like the song the last group picks. Besides they would pick a rap song, that would go over.

i am not convinced that Haver listened to 500 other songs before choosing this one. After all, it’s a full time job trying not to offend anyone! Where did he find time to choose this garbage? Don’t Tread On Me by Metallica should be the new song, but it might offend a totalitarian government and those who cannot live without being told what to think.

Two days after trashing the history of the school you come up with a replacement. And you listened to 500 songs during that period. Must have been an all nighter to cover that much territory.
