FORT SMITH (KFSM)- Low-income families now have a new way to eat healthy, fresh and local now that the Fort Smith Farmer’s Market started accepting food stamps.
Organizers say this is something that has been three years in the works.
“I am not sure if the public market knows that we accept them yet,” James Jones, who is a vendor said. “I think this is the third week for them, but it will take a little while for the word to get out that we do accept them.”
Families can stock up on kale, eggplant, tomatoes, melons and other items using EBT.
“There’s not that many places around where they can do this,” organizer Joe Carr said. “And it helps the farmers as well, you know helps the local farmers, so it kind of helps both of us, low-income and the farmers.”
The Farmer’s Market on Garrison Avenue takes place every Saturday and Tuesday from 7 a.m. until noon.
