FORT SMITH (KFSM) — The Fort Smith Police Department was awarded CALEA Law Enforcement Accreditation for the fifth time, according to a release from the agency.
An award from CALEA, the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, remains in effect for three years.
The release states CALEA Accreditation begins with “a rigorous self-assessment, requiring a review of policies, practices and processes against internationally accepted public safety standards.”
Public feedback also plays a role in the process, as well as interview sessions.
A governing body of 21 commissioners decides which agencies will get the accreditation.
The release concluded: “CALEA congratulates the Fort Smith Police Department for demonstrating a commitment to professional excellence through accreditation.”
