FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) -- Dozens of University of Arkansas freshmen will be starting their fall 2015 semester in temporary dorms.

Currently, there are 115 more incoming freshmen than there are dorm rooms, according Billy Blount, Director of Administrative Services for university housing.

Blount said there are two factors responsible for the overcrowding; one is the lack of dorm room cancellations and the other is more students wanting to live on campus instead of with their parents. All U of A freshmen are required to live on campus unless they get an exemption or live with family.

During the fall 2014 semester, about 70 freshmen started out the school year living in temporary dorms, but Blount said all of them were moved into a room by the end of the session. Blount said he anticipates the same will happen this year. He also said all students are paying the same amount for dorm arrangements.

Blount said the university has a master plan for future housing on the south side of campus, but right now there is no time frame for the project. The U of A has 18 dorm buildings, one of which is an apartment complex that is run like a dorm.

Students with permission to move in early will start moving in August 11. The general student population will move in August 15 through 17. Classes start August 24.
