Tax-Free Electronics Draw Arkansans To Missouri

JANE, MISSOURI (KFSM) -- The tax-free holiday started Friday morning (August 7) in Missouri, and the item on everyone's list is electronics.

Throughout the weekend, computers and laptops under $3,500 are all tax-free. Printers, scanners, tablets, Ipads and other computer accessories are also tax-exempt.

Bob Holmes took advantage of the savings Friday at the Walmart in Jane. Holmes said he bought a $200 laptop.

"You know with the sales tax it's a nice surprise for us we saved a little over 6% so that's about 20 bucks or so, great deal," Holmes said.

Most school supplies and clothing items are also tax-free, but Holmes said it's a bigger difference with high-priced items.

"To us it's like well that's kind of nice because 6% out of 200 is certainly more than 6% of $15," Holmes said.

Walmart spokesman Blake Jackson said the tax-free holiday means extra revenue for the store. He said they bring in extra staff and open every register on Saturday and Sunday.

"It's our second busiest time of the year after the holiday blitz, so it's a time when a lot of customers come in, we buy very deep on our product to make sure they can get what they need," Jackson said.

Bella Vista resident Amber Marta said she and her daughter Claire drove across the state line to check out the laptops.

"We've been looking at them just for college purposes, regardless you're investing something and so yeah to find out it was going to be tax-free was a nice surprise," Marta said.

If customers don't want to shop in-store, Jackson said you can get the same deals on tax-free items online. He said the products have to be shipped to a Missouri address or picked up at a Missouri store in order to get the savings.

The tax-free holiday ends Sunday (August 9) at 11:59 p.m.
