FORT SMITH (KFSM) -- The first-ever “Day of Love,” dedicated to helping the homeless, will take place in Fort Smith Monday (August 10) at the Riverfront Amphitheater.

Volunteers spent Sunday (August 9) sorting through donated items like clothes, toothpaste, hairbrushes and bottled water that have been dropped off at Club Kinkead over the past few weeks.

Organizer Rick Eubank said he is expecting about 200 homeless people to benefit from the event.

“If we all got together and loved on people for just a minute, at the end of the day we would probably realize that we are all really the same,” he said.

Mary Kintz is volunteering for the event.

“Just trying to help these people get clothing, hygiene products, food in their stomachs," she said. "I mean, some of these people have not had a good home cooked meal in forever."

There will also be food and about 40 hairdressers cutting hair for free.

“We have all these people in the area that typically you would not give a second look to," Kintz said. "This gives them an opportunity to make friends. And it helps us as well, because we make new friends and we can see a side of life that maybe we did not know about before, and appreciate our own more."

The event goes from 12 to 6 p.m.
