LITTLE ROCK (KFSM) — Arkansas’ attorney general has asked Gov. Asa Hutchinson to set execution dates for eight death row inmates who have exhausted their appeals.

Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge’s office issued the following statement:

“I have asked the Governor to set execution dates for eight inmates on death row. These individuals were sentenced to death for the heinous crimes they committed. It is far past time that the sentences be carried out and justice served. I urge the Governor to move forward with setting execution dates as quickly as possible.”

The announcement comes after the Arkansas Department of Corrections informed Rutledge earlier this month that it had obtained lethal-injection drugs and an official protocol for using them.

JR Davis, the spokesman for Gov. Hutchinson, said the governor has received the letter asking him to set the execution dates. Davis said the governor wants to move quickly, but there is no exact timeline for when those will be set.

There has not been an execution in the Natural State since 2005. Currently there are 34 inmates on death row in the Arkansas Department of Corrections.
