ROGERS (KFSM) --  A fire caused by a gas leak on Sunday (Sept. 6) was the result of inappropriate use of a backhoe, according to the Rogers Fire Department.

Fire Chief Tom Jenkins said that the backhoe driver nicked the pipe, rupturing the gas line. The chief said it was likely an act of vandalism.

Fire officials said they got a call that a power line was down on Poplar Street. They said when they arrived around 8:40 p.m. they realized a main gas line was ruptured.

Jenkins said no one was hurt and nothing burned except the backhoe.

Source gas was also on scene Sunday night. Their offices are closed for the holiday and were unavailable for comment.

"I was out in the yard picking up the leaves. And I heard a bang--it scared me," Dorothy Hudson, who lives nearby, said. "I looked up, and there it went off like a firecracker. Big, big fire came out. At first I got scared, I ran up to the front porch, and those people were looking and they called the fire departments."

Hudson said she could feel the heat on her house, and stayed up all night till 11:30 p.m. when she said the fire was put out.
