SPRINGDALE (KFSM) — A Springdale teacher won a Voya Financial award and grant to implement an innovative teaching idea into her classroom.

Brittany Berry, an Environmental and Spacial Technology facilitator at Helen Tyson Middle School in Springdale, won $2,000 as part of the Voya Unsung Heroes Grant.

She was one of two educators in the state, and 100 total, who won the award out of a pool of 1,000 applicants. The other Arkansas teacher was from Greenbrier. Berry will go on to compete for one of three top prizes — an additional $5,000, $10,000 or $25,000 to expand the project.

Berry’s idea, dubbed “HTMS Collaboratory,” would create an interactive workshop where students engage with science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics, the release states.  The program would introduce students to innovative technologies and cutting-edge resources, like 3D printers, microcontrollers and computer-aided drafting.

The program will be designed by the middle school students and will be available before and after school, the release states.
