VAN BUREN (KFSM) — The Van Buren City Council voted Monday night (Sept. 22) to increase water and sewer rates by about $7.25 per month for the average household.

Steve Dufresne, the director of utilities for Van Buren Municipal Utilities, said the sewer increase per month will be about $5.75 for the average household and the water increase will be about $1.50 per month for the average household.

The rate increases will go toward capital improvements of the water and sewer systems, Dufresne said. Part of the sewer system improvements are related to Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality regulations concerning sewer overflow, according to Dufresne.

The last water rate increase was made in 2011 and current sewer rates were adopted in 2005, Dufresne said.
