FORT SMITH (KFSM) — Police have arrested an 18 year-old man on suspicion of first degree battery after he was identified as a person of interest in a shooting Wednesday morning (Sept. 23), according to a press release.

Derrick Scott Haynes requested an attorney prior to being interviewed by police officers, and was placed under arrest for a probable cause. He is behind bars at the Sebastian County Detention Center without a bond.

The shooting victim, a 17 year-old, was taken to a hospital and rushed into surgery, where he is in intensive care, according to the release.

Kimmons Junior High School was put on temporary lock down while Fort Smith SWAT searched a nearby residence for Haynes.  He was not located and the school system was appropriately notified, the release stated.

Haynes was located inside a residence in 1800 block of South Q Street.

The investigation is ongoing.
