FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) – The Bikes, Blues & BBQ annual barbecue cook-off happened Friday (Sept. 25) evening.

The competition gave barbecue enthusiasts from around the nation the opportunity to showcase their cooking skills.

For a small entrance fee of $6.00, the public was treated to all the barbecue available.

Dcarlos Johnson, with Big J's, said his chicken recipe thrives off of the seasoning.

"I like to have my meat with the flavor where you don't have to have [any] barbecue sauce," Johnson said. "My saying is, ‘you don't suck the bone, we will buy it back’.”

But others, like Fayetteville’s own Derek Wunder, said his recipe is centered on his special sauce.

"I make my own sauce. So I'm banking on the sauce to carry me through the competition," Wunder said. "I was making my sauce until about two in the morning.”

While the chicken given to the public was provided by Sam’s Club, some teams also brought a few meats of their own to impress the judges.

"I'll be cooking brisket, pulled pork, and baby back ribs," Johnson said.

5NEWS spoke to one team who cooked an entire hog.

While contestants said the money at hand for the best food is always a plus, those 5NEWS spoke with said the competition is just a good excuse to do what they love.

"The smile on [a customer’s] face, puts a smile on my face," Wunder said. "It definitely makes it worth my time and effort. It takes a lot of time to make some good barbecue.”
