WHIRLPOOL STILL

FORT SMITH (KFSM) — A Whirlpool Corp. executive informed city leaders that the decontamination process is making progress, but it will be ongoing for a while.

Mayor Sandy Sanders said the meeting on Tuesday afternoon (Oct. 13) was to update the Board of Directors on the cleaning project.

“There are improvements being made,” Sanders said. “But the work will go on for quite some time.”

He said among the discussions was the possible future use for the existing buildings, and the potential to work with a realtor from Dallas, Texas or Tulsa, Okla. to develop the property.

“But first,” Sanders said. “The cleanup of the grounds has to happen, and that is still a ways off before completion.”

He was referring to the trichloroetheylene, or TCE, that was discovered at the Jenny Lind site.

Sanders said he expects another update on the cleaning operation in January 2016.
