SEQUOYAH COUNTY (KFSM) -- A man was taken into custody Thursday afternoon (Oct. 15) after attempting to flee from deputies on foot via a tunnel built under his house.

Sheriff Ron Lockhart said Vincent Small, 57, lived in the Belfonte community of northeast Sequoyah County, and the department had conducted a surveillance of his residence during the week.

Small was a survivalist and had threatened to not be taken alive, Lockhart stated.

When county deputies and Oklahoma Highway Patrol converged on Small's residence Thursday, they were aware of the tunnel and waited for his exit, according to Lockhart.

Small had been considered an "armed and dangerous" suspect in August after deputies said he stole a pickup truck.

Small was arrested on suspicion of grand larceny, domestic assault and battery by strangulation, and two counts of domestic assault and battery.
