ARKANSAS (KFSM) — America honors the men and women who have served in its armed forces today. Many ceremonies are happening in our area in Northwest Arkansas and the River Valley for Veterans Day. The following is a list of a few of the events happening this week:
NORTHWEST ARKANSAS: WEDNESDAY, NOV. 11
- Veterans Day Breakfast at U of A
- It’s the 3rd Annual Veterans Day Breakfast hosted by the UA Veterans Resource and Information Center. An opportunity for folks to thank all students, faculty and staff who are military vets, or are currently serving. It’s happening from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Arkansas Union, room 603.
- “Greenlight a Vet” Happening at Razorback Stadium
- The big screen at Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium will turn green as a beacon of light that can be seen for miles around Fayetteville. It’s in partnership with Walmart’s “Greenlight a Vet” campaign; shining a salute to our veterans.
- Free Haircuts For Vets
- Salon Fix in Fayetteville will be offering free haircuts. The salon is located on Green Acres Road. No appointment is necessary. They’re open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Walmart to Host General Stanley McChrystal in Bentonville
- Walmart will host a town hall event in honor of Veterans Day featuring General Stanley McChrystal, former commander of U.S. and international forces in Afghanistan, author of best-sellers Team of Teams and My Share of the Task, and Co-Founder of the McChrystal Group. It’s happening from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Walmart Home Office in Bentonville.
- Veterans Day Assembly at Heritage High
- Rogers Heritage High School will host its fifth annual Veterans Day Assembly at 1:05 p.m. in the school’s gym. Congressman Steve Womack will be the guest speaker.
- Congressman Womack Participates in Veterans Memorial Park Dedication
- The city’s newly renovated veterans park includes a special monument dedicated to military servicemen and women who were born in, or stationed in Rogers and killed in action. This event will kick off at 4 p.m.
RIVER VALLEY: WEDNESDAY, NOV. 11
- 14th Annual Veterans Day Parade in Van Buren
- All veterans and active military personnel will be honored. The parade will take place on historic Main Street. The event begins at 6:30 p.m.
- Ceremony to Honor Veterans at Fort Smith National Cemetery
- Veterans will be looking back and remembering the years they spent serving out country. Also honoring those who are still putting their lives on the line. It will be the first Veterans Day to include a new memorial of a soldier on his knee. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m.
- Free Dental Work For Veterans in Van Buren
- Morton Family Dentistry in Van Buren will be offering free dental work to local vets. This includes free cleanings, fillings and extractions. To make an appointment, call 479-474-9696.
- Veterans Day Reception in Fort Smith
- The Fort Smith Museum of History is honoring local vets and their families to share stories and refreshments. It’s happening from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at 320 Rogers Avenue.
- Color Guard Ceremony at UA- Fort Smith
- Will include a recognition of veterans who are missing in action or prisoners of war. A panel of veterans will also be there to answer questions from the public. Happening from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center.
- Greenwood High Honoring Vets
- Join the high school as they pay tribute to our veterans. It starts at 10:30 a.m. at the Performing Arts Center. Everyone is welcome to attend.
- Arkoma Veterans Assembly
- The 5th and 6th graders will host an assembly at the Arkoma Gym. Anyone is welcome to attend. It kicks off at 1 p.m.
NORTHWEST ARKANSAS: SATURDAY, NOV. 14
- 7th Annual Veterans Memorial 5K Race on Saturday, November 14th
- The Regional National Cemetery Improvement Corporation (RNCIC), a non-profit organization will host this race Saturday beginning at 8 a.m. at the Fayetteville National Cemetery.The purpose of the 5K race is to raise funds for the RNCIC to purchase land adjacent to the cemetery; to clear the land and to give it to the Department of Veteran’s Affairs to ensure that the Fayetteville National Cemetery can continue to receive veterans for burial.
RIVER VALLEY: SATURDAY, NOV. 14
- 4th Annual Veterans Day Parade and Fall Festival on Saturday, November 14th
- Happening at the Chaffee Crossing Historic District. Medal presentation starts at 11 a.m. The parade will begin at noon.
- 8th Annual LeFlore County Veteran Day Parade on Saturday, November 14th
- The parade kicks off at 10 a.m. starting at Carl Albert State College and ending in downtown Poteau. A free lunch will be served at 11 a.m. at the Bob Lee Kidd Civic Center.
