FORT SMITH (KFSM ) -- Students at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith are hoping to transform the look of a tunnel with paint.

The tunnel under Grand Avenue has been in place for years, and senior Kayla Schluterman has been using it throughout college.

“I’ve spent so much time walking back and forth and not really even paying attention because, it's kind of just dull in here,” Schluterman said. “It's more just like, I have to go through this tunnel.”

Art students in Bryan Alexis’ Special Topics Mural Painting class are hoping to change that.

“They wanted to make it a visual treat when you're coming down here,” Alexis said.

The same group of students who took part in the Unexpected Project earlier this year are using their paintbrushes to make going from point “A” to point “B” a little more exciting.

“You’re going to see lots of arrows, you're going to see faces,” Alexis said. “You're going to see the text that says 'Keep Going.’ And when they were conceptualizing for this project, they really took that into consideration: the stopping in the middle and resting, and viewing, and making something visually exciting as you travel.”

Schluterman said she and her peers found a way to combine their artistic skills.

“We all have bits and pieces of our own styles in it, and we've all contributed," Schluterman said. "But all together, it's really cohesive.”

The majority of the paint was donated from the Lowe's store in Van Buren.

The students have a deadline to complete the project by Dec. 2.
