FORT SMITH (KFSM)– More than 800 low-income families received Thanksgiving meals Saturday (Nov. 21) thanks to a local charity.

Charolette Tidwell and Antioch for Youth and Family put together 55,000 pounds of food to distribute Saturday morning at Martin Luther King Junior Park in Fort Smith.

Ken Kupchick with the River Valley Regional Food Bank said turkey and fresh produce such as sweet potatoes, onion and cabbage were handed out just in time for the holidays.

“This is a carry-over from the events that happened in the summer.” Kupchick said, “We’re very concerned about children going without school-provided meals through the summer months, so we did this each month through the summer and now were doing it for Thanksgiving.”

Breakfast, lunch and dinner items were also handed out to help get families through the end of this month. An estimated 2,400 people were helped by the program.
