JOHNSON (KFSM)-- The American flag posted in front of city hall and the police department was retired Saturday (Dec. 12) in a ceremony led by a local Boy Scout troop.

The ceremony started at 9 a.m. and also included members of the V.F.W. Johnson police officer Michael Lisenbee said over half the officers at the department are  veterans.

"Everyday we come to work, we see the flag and we saw the kind of condition it was in," Lisenbee said. "It was not favorable for us, so it was important for us to make sure the flags were not only replaced but replaced in a proper and dignified way."

The ceremony was conducted by Troop 94 of Prairie Grove. Lisenbee said it was important to involve the youth.

"It just means a lot to see them take pride and be excited to do it and do a good thing for this city and a good thing for our country," Lisenbee said.

Boy Scout Mason McCourt helped change out the flags, and said he was grateful for the opportunity to help.

"I really think that it should be honored, because many men and women have died for it," McCourt said. "I just think that since we have the freedom to that we really should."

The new flags were dedicated by the mayor.
