FORT SMITH (KFSM)-- A Fort Smith fifth grader had a unique request for her 11th birthday party.

Alexa Crowder, a Cook Elementary student, invited her entire 5th grade class and all her friends to buy items for the Sebastion County Humane Society instead of birthday gifts.

"I heard the humane society had some budget cuts and I wanted to help them," Crowder said.

She said she put the humane society's wish list on her invitations. Crowder said she wanted to help out because she loves animals.

"She said 'mom I want to help them raise some money' so we decided and come up with this, this was her idea," Alexa's mother Sheila said.

Alexa and her friends collected paper towels, dog food, cat food and money for the shelter. All the items were taken to shelter after the birthday party ended.
