HUNTINGTON (KFSM)  --  Volunteer firefighter Terry Bailey, a Huntington resident, was working at his regular full time job as a driver on Interstate 49 near Texarkana on Monday night, when he saw a multiple-vehicle accident. The wrecks were on both the south bound and northbound lane.

According to Arkansas State Police, there was extreme dense fog, which is believed to have led to the accidents.

"Being  a trained firefighter, he did what he was trained to do," said Bailey's fellow firefighter and Huntington Fire Chief Duane Logsdon. "He parked his truck and got out."

Bailey was helping several victims of the crash when police believe a pick-up struck him.

Bailey died at the scene. He was 54-years-old.

Two others died in the crash and several others were taken to local hospitals.

Volunteers with the Huntington Fire Department, for which Bailey worked, said they drove an ambulance to Texarkana and brought back Bailey's body.

"Terry had been with the fire department eight years. Being a firefighter, that's a big commitment. He was always here willing to do more than his share of the work that needed to be done," Logsdon said.

Huntington mayor Gary Lawrence said he is keeping in close contact with Bailey's family.

"We'll keep in contact and make sure anything they need, they'll have it. You know, there's a void here but as firefighters we know this happens and we'll have his back and go on forward," Lawrence said.
