FORT SMITH (KFSM) — A jury trial date has been scheduled to resolve the case of 2011 fire at Fort Chaffee in 2011.

According to court documents, the bench trial for Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority v United States of America will be held during the week of October 24, 2016 before Judge P.K. Holmes III.

The complaint document states that while touring buildings in Fort Chaffee on August 3, 2011, “USA employees, including members of the Kentucky National Guard, started a fire and failed to extinguish the fire which destroyed 111 buildings.”

The complaint goes on to state that one or more of the Kentucky National Guard members discarded a burning cigarette or cigarettes on the Fort Chaffee property which started the fire.

The amount in damages and losses, along with the cost of cleanup and remediation was stated to be $650,000, according to the Fort Chaffee Redevelopment Authority.
