FORT SMITH (KFSM)-- Many homes are flooded in the River Valley, but one Fort Smith family is battling flooding in their house for the third time in 2015.

Shannon and Chuck Fawcett have lived on their house on Riverlyn Terrance for close to 28 years. They said for 25 years, they didn't have an issue with flooding, but this year their house will flood for the third time.

"In May we flooded twice," Chuck Fawcett said. "They flooded us two days later, a second time, and it was 25 years since the last time we flooded."

Saturday (Dec. 26) and Sunday (Dec. 27), friends and family helped clear out every item from the first floor. The entire floor was renovated over the summer, and now will likely be underwater again.

The Fawcett's said they don't understand why the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers can't control the river level when they know homes will be flooded out.

"If they could pull back some it, slow it down, so it would miss that 32 feet for the next two days," Fawcett said.

They said they got a call from the Corps of Engineers Sunday morning (Dec. 27), and they said they were just following procedure. Shannon said she's frustrated, because for so many years this wasn't an issue.

"It is our home, and other people's homes, and I realize that there are businesses up stream and maybe they have more financially at stake than we do, but this is our lives," Shannon said.

The Fawcett's said they do plan to rebuild after assessing this event's flood damage.
