FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM)-- A state-wide campaign from Arkansas State Police to cut back on the number of people driving drunk this holiday season ended today (Jan 3).

Officer Ryan Schlieff with the Fayetteville Police Department said campaigns are needed at a time when celebrating, and drinking, happens often.

"Everyone likes to go out and have a good time you know," Schlieff said, "And they have a few too many drinks, and don't make good decisions."

Schlieff said for the month of December, the department made 47 DWI arrests. The state-wide campaign ran from Dec. 18 until Jan 3., and Schlieff said 30 arrests were made during that time period.

He said the national slogan of "Drive Sober, Don't Get Pulled Over," is a good reminder for drivers to think twice before getting behind the wheel.

"If they get out and think that they can drive, they might have had too much," Schlieff said, "And they could end up having an accident where they could hurt themselves or other people."

He said on New Years Eve, the department had two additional patrols who were designated to find impaired drivers. Schlieff said four DWI arrests were made on Dec. 31.

In Springdale, police said they made 25 traffic stops, nine DWI arrests and had 11 officers on duty.
