FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) -- A home on Mount Sequoyah in Fayetteville was damaged in a fire Wednesday (Jan. 6).

The the fire at the home on Rodgers Drive started before 4 p.m. in the garage, according to fire crews at the scene.

The couple who lives in the home called 911 after smelling smoke and seeing it fill the garage. Both people got out safely, Battalion Chief Mauro Campos said.

The fire took longer than usual to put out because of the large size of the house and the way it's segmented, Campos said. He estimates 80% of the house is a loss after the fire spread to the second floor and attic.

The cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.
