FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) -- A local teacher is under investigation after police said he may have had a student strip down to his underwear.

The Fayetteville Public Schools district said a band teacher at Ramay Junior High was accused of looking at a child inappropriately.

"We take all of these situations very seriously. That is why we acted immediately," said Alan Wilbourn, spokesman for the school district. "When we were made aware of the allegations against the teacher, he was immediately placed on administrative leave.”

Police said students at the school were trying on band uniforms, when one student was asked to take off some of his clothing.

“The student was brought into a small room with the band director, and was made to undress down to his underwear to try on a new pair of pants,” Said Sgt. Craig Stout, spokesman for the Fayetteville Police Department. “[The student said] it made him uncomfortable.”

Stout said the police department was notified by school staff.

“The principal at Ramay Junior High brought this to our attention when a parent had contacted them about an incident with the former Ramay band teacher and a student," Stout said.

Police said, for now, no charges have been filed against the teacher.

"From what we do know, there was no type of sexual contact between the teacher and student," Stout said.

Police said the teacher, whose identity has not been released, could face misdemeanor charges in the incident.

In the meantime, the school district said Ramay is still a safe place for students, and added that the teacher won’t be returning.

"We have also received, and accepted, [the teacher’s] resignation," Wilbourn said.

Police said the next step is to turn the investigation over to the Washington County Prosecutor to see if charges are warranted.
