LITTLE ROCK (KFSM) — The Arkansas National Guard announced that it would close two armories in 2017.

The National Guard announced on Tuesday (Jan. 12) that the readiness centers in Magnolia and Monticello will be returned to their respective communities, saving the Guard an estimated $81,000 each year.

The decision was made by Governor Asa Hutchinson after receiving feedback from community leaders and the Arkansas Military Department, according to a press release.

The Guard’s plan is based on an effort to reduce operating and maintenance costs, and to restructure and rebalance the forces in Arkansas.   The move will reduce the total number of readiness centers in the state to 53.

The location in Magnolia will be returned to Southern Arkansas University.
