GANS (KFSM) -- Firefighters with the Gans Fire Department responded to a house fire on 4690 Road early Thursday morning (Jan. 14).  The home belonged to 79-year-old Betty Crow.

"I was at work. I got off work a little bit after 3 a.m. I didn't see it until I hit the property line," said Morgan Crow, Betty's granddaughter. "My heart dropped because there were flames. It's something you never expect to pull up on."

Morgan Crow said she lived in the home with her grandmother, along with her uncle and his girlfriend. She said when she pulled into the driveway she was met by her uncle -- Betty's son.

" My uncle came toward me and he said, 'She's gone, Morgan. I tried and tried and tried. The smoke was just everywhere.' He got her to a point and couldn't physically drag her any further," she said.

According to family members, the uncle and his girlfriend were home at the time of the fire.

"He said, when she woke him up it was already pretty bad. She had been trying to fight it," Morgan Crow said.

Betty Crow died in the fire. The fire marshal said the official cause is still under investigation, but family members said the fire started in Betty's bedroom.

Morgan Crow said she  was raised by her grandmother and came to live with her when she was 5.

"You never get over losing somebody. Especially somebody who meant what she meant to me," she said.

According to family, Betty Crow was a woman who often spoke her mind. She had seven children and loved to cook big meals for her family.

Her funeral will be held Friday (Jan. 22), at 1 p.m. at the Gans Bible Church.
