FORT SMITH (KFSM) - A group of leaders will be unveiling details about a new park development along the Arkansas River in Fort Smith on Tuesday (Jan.19).

The meeting will start at noon and will take place at the Creekmore Park Community Center. It's open to the public.

An architect and engineering firm will be showing designs to the Parks Commission. The designs will show a vision for 51 acres located off Riverfront Drive. The land is about two miles north of Harry E. Kelley Park in downtown Fort Smith.

The group is planning for the park to be developed over the next three years for a total cost of $1.5 million. Organizers hope that the new park will bring a lot of fun attractions to the downtown area.

Back in October of 2015, Fort Smith residents were asked to fill out services asking what they would like to see in the future park. The answers came back included playground equipment, a community garden, a splash pad, and even a soccer field.

Leaders with the Parks Commission said the first phase will be building the soccer fields because it was at the top of the list.

According to officials, ten acres of the land is going to be set aside for a recreation center. Construction for the new park is expected to begin this year.
