Strathman Helps Hogs Earning Honors

Madison Strathman has earned SEC Freshman of the Week three times for the Arkansas swimming and diving team this season.

FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) - The Arkansas swimming and diving team is a few weeks away from the SEC Championships. Friday and Saturday they cleaned up during their quad meet against Vanderbilt, Clemson, and Houston.

"We had some good swims today," Arkansas coach Sean Schimmel said. "We had some people step up. We had some people in a spot where they learned some things for next week when we have our senior meet."

Helping the Hogs make waves this season has been Madison Strathman. The Missouri native has earned SEC Freshman of the Week three times this season.

"Honestly, like that's crazy," Strathman said. "I mean, normal people are lucky to get that once, even twice. But, three times that's pretty crazy."

The honor came again after winning the 200 breast stroke against Auburn last week. Saturday, she did that again, and with an even faster time of 2:16:85. She quite possible could be well on her way to being the few in the conference to be named SEC Freshman of the Week four times in one season. Only three others have accomplished such feat.

"Coming in I was not the fastest. Sydney [Angell] was way faster than me. So, I was just pumped to have a breast stroker to train with. I've never had that experience. And having a different coach, being in a different environment, being with these faster girls I think just having this whole environment has really helped me develop to where I am today," Strathman said.

The No. 24 ranked team is currently tied for most individual weekly honors in school history with five, and the most since 2013. Their final home meet is Saturday January 30, against Illinois with an 11 a.m. start.
