VAN BUREN (KFSM) -- A man who led police on a high-speed chase through Fort Smith crashed his vehicle in Van Buren on Tuesday (Jan. 26).

Nickolaus Smith, 29, is behind bars at the Crawford County Detention Center. He was wanted on felony and misdemeanor warrants.

According to Arkansas State Police, Smith led police through a red light in Fort Smith while they were chasing him, causing a state trooper to crash.

Van Buren police laid down spike strips to stop the vehicle, and the chase ended shortly after.

Smith was taken to the hospital and released hours later. Troopers also said that two other individuals were in the vehicle and were taken into custody by Fort Smith Police.

The state trooper whose vehicle crashed in Fort Smith was not taken to a hospital and said to be fine.

Smith is behind bars on the following felony charges:

  • aggravated assault
  • criminal mischief
  • reckless driving with physical injury
  • possession of a controlled substance
  • theft by receiving (under $1,000)
