SALLISAW (KFSM)  --  The multi-million dollar Sallisaw Sports Complex is set to open soon.

The voter-approved complex currently consists of four softball fields and four baseball fields.

"I think this has already brought new business to town," said Sallisaw Youth League board member Frank Sullivan III. "This is going to absolutely bring thousands of people to Sallisaw when we have weekend tournaments."

After it's fully finished, the sports complex will consist of a few more additions, including soccer fields.

"The sports complex is an overall master plan that includes youth league football and other sports, a walking trail on the facility and a playground we will put in over the next year or so," said Sallisaw city manager Clayton Lucas.

In 2007 a hotel tax was passed to buy the 130 acres on Highway 64 in Sallisaw. It is now the site of the new sports complex. In 2013 a half-cent sales tax was passed by voters to build the current complex.

Construction began in 2014. Lucas said for the sports complex to be 100 percent complete, it may take a few more years.

"We hope we can do it in the next seven to 10 years. It may be sooner than that. Maybe later. It always comes down to funding," he said.

Lucas said construction should be complete on the parking lot, baseball fields and softball fields in the next few weeks. Softball and baseball tournaments are expected to be held at the complex this summer.

"We think that it will bring teams in as we get well known," he said. "We think it will bring in teams to have additional tournaments from surrounding states -- Arkansas, Texas, Kansas, Missouri."
