FAYETTEVILLE (KFSM) — The University of Arkansas remains in the highest research classification among U.S. universities for another year, after the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching released their rankings.
Earning this rating puts the U of A among just two percent of institutions nationally, according to a university article. They first earned this distinction in 2011.
“Maintaining your Carnegie classification is not a given, but evidence of deliberate scholarly work and productivity,” Chancellor Joe Steinmetz said in the article. “This demonstrates our commitment to the highest levels of research, for the benefit of the people and the state of Arkansas.”
The category is defined as a doctoral-granting, research university with very high levels of research activity. It is awarded based on measures of scholarly productivity, such as the number and type of doctoral degrees awarded, and the amount of research grants and activity.
The Carnegie Classification is based on analysis of data on 4,633 colleges and universities, and it is reassessed every five years. Their classifications are widely accepted as the standard designations for accredited U.S. universities and colleges.
