CRAWFORD COUNTY (KFSM) -- A woman was killed on Interstate 40 in Crawford County early Tuesday morning (Feb. 9) after she was hit by a semi, according to Arkansas State Police.

Karol Sheffield, 55, of Port Orange, Florida, was a passenger in the semi when she fell out of the moving truck and was run over by the trailer, according to a report from ASP.

The report states Sheffield was attempting to secure a door when she fell out.

Dispatchers said the accident happened around 2:45 a.m. and the woman was taken to Mercy Hospital in Fort Smith where she was later pronounced dead.

The Criminal Investigation Division of ASP is conducting further investigation into the incident.

The name of the driver is William Lloyd Sheffield of Daytona Beach, Florida, according to ASP. Volusia County records show Sheffield has had two counts of domestic violence leveled against him, once in 2003, and again in 2007. In 2010, he was arrested on a grand theft auto charge.

Sheffield has not been charged in his wife's death at this time.

Bill Sadler with ASP said it is up to Crawford County prosecutor Mark McCune to decide whether or not charges will be brought against him.

In the original fatality report, ASP listed the woman as the driver of the semi, but that information has since been updated.
