CAVE SPRINGS (KFSM)-- A community building in Cave Springs has been closed for months and may never reopen, after inspectors said the building is unsafe in several areas.

The building was constructed in the 1930s and has served as a school gym, a courtroom and a place for city council meetings.

Mayor Travis Lee said there are major structural problems with the community building.

"The floors are about three and a half inches off from the center," Lee said. "There's mold on one side of the building, the wood that's holding the roof together is rotting away as well, and they've had four engineers, inspectors say it's not safe."

Lee said the city council appointed a committee to look into hiring an engineer for repairs.

"We didn't want to see it tore down," said resident Don Shores, who is on the committee. "We wanted to see it repaired."

Shores said he grew up playing basketball in the gym and has many memories he would like preserved. Lee said so far, no engineers have been willing to give an estimate on the cost. He said the committee was given $10,000 to help find someone to inspect the building.

The issue will be discussed again at the next city council meeting in March.
