FORT SMITH (KFSM) — The River Valley Food Bank in Fort Smith received a large donation of canned soup from the business Conagra.

Volunteers packaged the soup, along with pudding cups, and will spend the week distributing it to area schools.

Volunteers are calling the campaign “Have a Souper Weekend,” which is in its third year.

They have identified several schools in the Fort Smith, Van Buren and Barling school districts that have more than 70 percent of the children on free or reduced lunch programs. Those schools will receive the donations to hand out to students.

“We’ll be running the routes to Van Buren, outlying areas of Fort Smith and Fort Smith central today, tomorrow and Friday to make sure that the soup is where it needs to be when the kids get out on Friday afternoon,” said volunteer Ken Kupchick.

The organization has chosen this weekend because Monday is President’s Day, when students will be out of school. Volunteers say there are more than 7,000 people who will not have a healthy meal during the holiday weekend.
